Italy's Giorgia Meloni revealed her separation from her longtime partner following the broadcast of a television show featuring him making inappropriate comments to female coworkers, marking the most recent controversy associated with the Prime Minister's boyfriend.
Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has parted ways with her long-time partner and the father of her daughter, journalist Andrea Giambruno. This decision came in the wake of a satirical television program airing footage of Giambruno making inappropriate comments to female colleagues.
The news of their breakup made headlines on numerous Italian news outlets on a Friday morning. Their relationship had faced public scrutiny earlier in the year when Giambruno made controversial statements concerning women and rape. Following a horrific incident involving the rape of two young girls in southern Italy, Giambruno suggested that women should refrain from drinking excessively to avoid becoming victims, a statement widely criticized for placing blame on women for sexual assault.
At that time, Meloni had defended Giambruno, stating that he was offering the kind of advice any mother, including her own, would have given her when she was younger. Expressing frustration at being asked to account for Giambruno's remarks, she had also asserted that he was entitled to his opinions, and she was not responsible for his statements.
However, the recent revelations from the TV show "Striscia la Notizia" seemed to be the tipping point for Meloni. This primetime program, part of the Mediaset broadcaster owned by the late Silvio Berlusconi, dedicated two evenings to scrutinizing Giambruno this week, using behind-the-scenes clips and audio recordings.
In the footage and audio, Giambruno can be heard discussing his affair with a co-worker and repeatedly inviting his female colleagues to join an open relationship involving threesomes and foursomes, as well as inquiring about their relationship statuses.
Meloni and Giambruno had been in a relationship for almost a decade and share a 7-year-old daughter, Ginevra. While she did not provide details about the reasons behind the breakup and did not directly reference the television show, Meloni released a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Friday, confirming the end of her relationship with Giambruno.
"My nearly decade-long relationship with Andrea Giambruno has come to a close," she penned, expressing her gratitude for the many "beautiful years we've shared" and for their daughter.
She noted that their paths had been diverging "for quite some time," and it was now necessary to recognize this fact. She also emphasized her commitment to preserving their friendship and their daughter at all costs, while subtly alluding to those attempting to undermine her by targeting her personal life
